Teaching Your Dog To Spin

"Spin!"

Would you like to have your dog spin around in circles? It’s a great and impressive trick to show to dinner guests. One of those tricks that makes your houseguests say, “Wow!”

Before you start to teach “Zinnia,” you need to grab a few things…

Clicker Method

Throughout the entire tricks section, I use the clicker method for training dogs. The clicker method, in my opinion, is the best method available to use, because it enables the dog to know exactly what it is being treated for. Also, the clicker method lets children and multiple people train the animal, making it incredibly "user friendly." For more on this, please see THE CLICKER METHOD.

What You'll Need

  • Clicker

  • Treats

  • Touch stick

The Need To Know

Now, Command Zinnia to touch the stick; but before she touches it, move it around so that she has to spin around to touch it. Click/treat when she’s made a spin. Do this again, several times. Then try spinning more than once. Don’t click until she’s made her spin twice. Click/treat when she makes her perfect spin. Then try teaching her t spin three times. When you have a big treat in your hand, your dog (if she’s excited,) will tend to spin faster. This is what you want. The faster Zinnia spins, the better. Give her even more treats after you click her for spinning fast. Pretty soon, you’ll have a dizzy dog that spins on command!

Variations on this trick:

Spin Left, Spin Right - With a hand motion and a verbal command, tell your dog which way to spin. “Spin Left!” with pointing the correct way, Zinnia spins left. “Now, spin right!” She steps spinning left and starts spinning the other way.

Catch your Tail - If you can teach your dog to spin really fast, it will like like she’s trying t catch her tail. You might could even teach her to actually catch her tail by clicking the behavior.

Other Names for this Command:

  • Twirl

  • Catch your Tail

Hand Motions:

  • Twirling your finger to make circle in the air

  • Pointing left (if you do variation 1 of the Spin trick)

  • Pointing right (if you do variation 1 of the Spin trick)
