Teaching Your Dog To Go Out of a Room

"Out!"
Going out of a room is important for your dog to learn. If you have company, and your dog wants to see them at the dinner table, or in the living room, he should know the command, “out,” so your guests won’t be bothered. Or if you’re eating, it would be especially nice if you didn’t have the irritation of your dog in your lap licking up the crumbs.

Clicker Method
Throughout the entire tricks section, I use the clicker method for training dogs. The clicker method, in my opinion, is the best method available to use, because it enables the dog to know exactly what it is being treated for. Also, the clicker method lets children and multiple people train the animal, making it incredibly "user friendly." For more on this, please see THE CLICKER METHOD.

The Need To Know
To teach “Out,” have your training session near your kitchen, while you’re eating a snack. (make sure you have a pretty big snack, and that none of it is poisonous to Fido, because you’re going to share some of it with him!) Do not click/treat when Fido is in the kitchen, and definitely don’t click/treat as soon as he gets out of the kitchen. This triggers the behavior that means, “I get a treat if I go in the kitchen and then come back out.” You want Fido to stay out. So do the obvious thing - click and treat when your dog is laying down right outside your kitchen. To get him to do this, get Fido out of the room and have him lay down. Wait a while until you are satisfied that he’s stayed there long enough to deserve a treat, then click your clicker, and give him part of your snack. Then wait another few minutes and share another piece of your snack with your puppy. Repeat until you only have a little bit left of your snack. Click and give it all to Fido. End of a successful session!
