Teaching Your Dog To Get Off

"Off!"

Off is very helpful when you have to get your heavy dog down from a sofa, or out of a vehicle when you get home from the vet.

Clicker Method

Throughout the entire tricks section, I use the clicker method for training dogs. The clicker method, in my opinion, is the best method available to use, because it enables the dog to know exactly what it is being treated for. Also, the clicker method lets children and multiple people train the animal, making it incredibly "user friendly." For more on this, please see THE CLICKER METHOD.

What You'll Need

  • Clicker

  • Treats

  • A couch or something your dog can get down from

The Need To Know

When your dog is on something, grab your clicker and treats for a 5-7 minute session. Click/treat the second his paws come off the thing he’s on at the moment. Then wait for him to get up on something again, or tell him to (e.g. pat the chair for him to jump on). Click and treat when he gets off. A few more times will let him know that he’s being treated to something he likes for getting ‘off.’ Then he’ll start doing it more frequently. Say “Off” right before you click. Repeat this a few more times and then say, “Off!” to see if he understands the command. If he doesn’t, it’s ok. Go back to saying “Off” right before you click, but do this step only once again and let him take a nap or do something else and come back to it later.

Other Names for this Command:

  • Down (but don’t use this for this trick if you’ve taught him the word ‘down’ for lying down.)

Motions that Make Fido understand "Off" faster:

  • Tapping your foot

  • Tilting your head down
