Teaching Your Dog to Leave an Object Where It Is

"Leave It!"

“Leave It,” is training your dog to leave something where it is, rather than taking it and eating it or playing with it. This trick is a little bit similar to “drop it” They’re both good for your dog to know so that he won’t get himself hurt or get your stuff torn up.

Clicker Method

Throughout the entire tricks section, I use the clicker method for training dogs. The clicker method, in my opinion, is the best method availible to use, because it enables the dog to know exactly what it is being treated for. Also, the clicker method lets children and multiple people train the animal, making it incredibly "user friendly." For more on this, please see THE CLICKER METHOD.

What You'll Need

  • Treats

The Need To Know

Use a dog biscuit for this training session. Make sure he knows it’s there. Let him know you don’t want him to have it. Say firmly, “Leave it,” and walk away with him. If he leaves it and follows you, click and treat with the biscuit and something better than the biscuit, such as a liver treat or bacon. Repeat this several times and he will leave the biscuit every time.
