"Jump!"
Up/Jump is another of those “fun-tricks”, since it isn’t normal for a dog to jump up and down, and is a little humorous. It is also a “working/service trick,” since it can also help you to get your dog up on a table or in a car.

Clicker Method
Throughout the entire tricks section, I use the clicker method for training dogs. The clicker method, in my opinion, is the best method available to use, because it enables the dog to know exactly what it is being treated for. Also, the clicker method lets children and multiple people train the animal, making it incredibly "user friendly." For more on this, please see THE CLICKER METHOD.

What You'll Need
There are a few items you’ll need before teaching your dog to jump. Usually, it is healthier for the dog to be older than six months before trying to do jumping exercises, due to hip problems in growing puppies. But in any case, here's some items you'll need before getting started.

The touch stick

The Need To Know
Now, get the touch stick and hold it high over your dog's head. Tell her to touch the stick (Touch is what Ginger learned last week). As soon as Ginger gets up on her hind legs to touch the stick, click the behavior. Make sure you don’t click when she touches the stick. Even though “touch” a good thing for Ginger to do, you taught that to her last week, and that’s not what we’re trying to do now. It will lead to confusion. Click as soon as she gets on her hind legs. Do this again, but just a tad higher. Start saying “Jump” when you get pretty high and make sure you give just a little bit more treats each time Ginger goes higher. When her feet have ‘jumped’ off the ground, stay at that level, but do it several more times. Then say, “Jump” and see if she’ll obey your command.

Note:
A five minute session is all you need for your ‘Jump’ sessions every day. If you are going to do a ten-minute session, reduce the sessions to every other day instead of daily. This is to keep your canine healthy and not sore.
