Teaching Your Dog To Ring A Bell

Signs of your dog needing to go outside to Park could include spinning around in circles, scratching at the door, or nudging you. The first sign means that it’s very urgent that you take him out right then (which isn’t that good of a sign). The second causes claw marks and shredded doors. The third is just annoying. Wouldn’t it be better if you could teach your dog to ring a little bell tied to your doorknob?

You need to teach “Zack” to ring the bell, but you'll need to get a few things:

What You'll Need

  • Clicker

  • Treats

  • A Jingle Bell (available at most craft stores)

Clicker Method

Throughout the entire tricks section, I use the clicker method for training dogs. The clicker method, in my opinion, is the best method available to use, because it enables the dog to know exactly what it is being treated for. Also, the clicker method lets children and multiple people train the animal, making it incredibly "user friendly." For more on this, please see THE CLICKER METHOD.

The Need To Know

Whenever you take Zack out to park, reach over and ring the bell tied to the doorknob. Then take him out. Do this every time you take him out to park. This makes Zack understand that every time the bell rings, the door opens. Every time Zack needs to go out, the bell rings, and the door opens. Every time Zack rings the bell, the door opens and Zack can relieve himself. Before long, you’ll be hearing a bell jingling instead of nudging and scratching.

Tips:

  • This trick can take more than one week for your dog to learn, but it is also one that you can teach along with another trick, such as Park.

  • Make sure you only ring the bell when you take Zack to park - not to play or take a walk or anything else. This will help him to not ring the bell when he wants to go out to play; only when he needs to park.

Other Names for this Command:

  • Ring
